Yuba Hut at Heartland Mall - Bringing you fantastic Aburi Donburi and fanciful sushi!

Yuba Hut is a Japanese eatery that sells sashimi, appealing sushi rolls and dons (rice bowls), specialising in Aburi dishes. In June 2017, Strait Times reported that Yuba Hut has opened another outlet in Heartland Mall (next to Kovan MRT station). The other outlet is located in Hillion Mall. Recently, many bloggers have blogged about Yuba Hut, especially their famous sushi - Champion Floss Maki. After trying the food at Yuba Hut, the dish of the day for me was their Aburi Salmon Don. It was highly recommended by my sister, Duckie.

Salmon Aburi Don S$14.90

Salmon Aburi Don
Aburi is a Japanese style of cooking fish, leaving it partially grilled. Japanese chefs usually cook the fish with a blowtorch, charring the surface of the fish. The result of this torching is a melt-in-the-mouth experience with a nice char flavour. Yuba Hut Salmon Aburi Don is every Aburi fan's fantasy. Not only was it perfectly torched, it was topped with a copious amount of Ikura and Tobiko roe. It was definitely the dish of the day for me!

Champion Floss Maki (4 pieces) S$9.90

Champion Floss Maki
Yuba Hut did a good job with all the sushi rolls if you are craving for sushi with interesting flavours bursting in your mouth. The Champion Floss Maki was very appealing as it was served with a generous amount of roe and meat floss. There was also a thick brown homemade sauce poured over the maki.

Champion Floss Maki
I am not sure why but the Champion Floss Maki that we had, was different from those that were blogged by others. I read from blogs that the Champion Floss Maki had raw salmon in the sushi. Look at mine! It had two types of fish. One was salmon and the other type looked like tuna. It was an enjoyable maki but I could detect a hint of BBQ sauce although the staff replied that it was homemade sauce, with a sheepish smile. For the record, I am not a fan of BBQ sauce but I enjoyed eating meat floss with roe.

Cream Cheese Mentaiko Salmon

(4 pieces) S$9.90

Cream Cheese Mentaiko Salmon
The Cream Cheese Mentaiko Salmon tasted better than it looked. I was expecting to be disgusted by the rich cream but no, there was a nice char flavour to balance the rich cream. The crispy bits also prevented the sushi from becoming a mushy mess. The cream itself tasted sourish and there was a hint of Mentai. The fish itself was very average.

Samurai Unagi Aburi Maki (4 pieces)  S$8.90

Samurai Unagi Aburi Maki
Unagi, freshwater eel, has been eaten by Japanese for years. It is believed to provide stamina for the Japanese when they eat it on the Day of the Ox during the Doyo period in summer. The cheese on top of the Samurai Unagi Aburi Maki was not too cheesy, thank God.  The Unagi tasted sweet.

Dish of the Day!
Yuba Hut is not a fancy restaurant but it serves fancy sushi. It is a no frills eatery, serving food of good quality. There are many other interesting items on their menu such as Taiyou Century Egg Sushi, Beef Steak Don and Bara Chirashi Don. You will like it if you are a fan of Aburi dishes.
